Ocular Migraine

If part of your vision suddenly disappears, you start seeing zigzag lines, flashing lights, or a blurry spot that spreads across your eye like a ripple, you might be experiencing an ocular migraine.

What Is It?

An ocular migraine is a strange little event where your vision changes, usually in one eye, for a short time, and then returns to normal. It’s different from a traditional migraine because it mainly affects your vision. You might not even get a headache with it.

What Does It Feel Like?

  • A blind spot or blurry area in your vision.
  • Flashing lights or zigzag patterns.
  • Wavy, shimmering lines that slowly move across your sight.
  • It usually lasts 10 to 30 minutes and then disappears.

Why Does It Happen?

Doctors think it’s caused by temporary changes in blood flow to parts of the brain or eye. Triggers can include stress, bright lights, skipping meals, lack of sleep, or even certain foods (like chocolate or cheese).

Should I Be Worried?

Ocular migraines are usually harmless, but the first time it happens, it can be really freaky. If it happens often, or if your vision doesn’t return to normal after an hour, it’s important to see your doctor. Occasionally, vision symptoms can look like something more serious.
