Optic Neuritis

If your vision suddenly looks like someone turned down the brightness on your world, and it hurts a little when you move your eyes, it could be something called optic neuritis.
 

What Is It?

Optic neuritis is when the optic nerve (the cable that connects your eye to your brain) gets inflamed or irritated. This can make your vision blurry, dim, or even disappear for a bit in one eye.

What Does It Feel Like?

• Blurry or grayish vision in one eye.
• Eye pain, especially when moving your eyes.
• Colors might look dull or faded.
• Vision usually gets better in a few days to weeks.

Why Does It Happen?

Your immune system, which usually fights germs, sometimes gets confused and attacks your own body. It can be linked to conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS).
 

Should I Be Worried?

It can sound scary, but the good news is that most people recover well. Still, if your vision suddenly changes or your eye hurts, don’t ignore it. A doctor, especially an eye doctor, can check your optic nerve and figure out what’s going on.
